Product Knowledge:
There are many factors that go into jewelry that everyone should try and learn a bit about before making that special purchase. The most common that is taught are the 4 C's. This is in reference to the diamonds.
CUT, CARAT, CLARITY,COLOR
1-CUT
Information about a Diamond Cut
The cut of a diamond refers to two separate elements:
1-The way the rough diamond is cut to produce a polished diamond
2-The shape of the diamond, the different styles of cuts e.g. Pear, Round, Marquise, Heart shaped etc.
Effects of a Good Diamond Cut
Diamonds are prized for their brilliance, sparkle and luster:
Brilliance or Fire - The amount of tiny flashes of light a diamond gives off through the reflection and refraction of light - the intensity of the light-reflecting power which maximizes the brilliance
Scintillation or Sparkle - A measure of the light reflected out by a diamond as it is viewed from different angles which occurs when light bounces among the diamond facets creating a really sparkling display
Lustre / luster - The brightness of an object that shines with reflected light
Dispersion - Dispersion refers to the prism of light refracted from within a cut and polished diamond and relates to the sparkling colors that are emitted from the stone as it is viewed from different angles
These elements may be visible even in their rough state; but in order to enhance these advantages the diamonds must be cut and polished. A skilful diamond cutter, or lapidary, is able to bring out all the brilliance of a diamond, whilst concealing its imperfections, by choosing the most appropriate cuts and the most appropriate proportions and symmetry.
Information about Proportion
The most important proportion is the ratio between the depth of the stone and its diameter, ideally this should be about 58%. Another proportion to be taken into account is the ratio between the height of the crown and the pavilion. Cuts with good proportions reflect more light and appear to look better than other diamonds of higher clarity and appears to look 2 or 3 grades higher than the actual color. The quality is also dependent upon the cutting skill on the diamond facets.
Facets produce the sparkle!
Facets are the smooth surface areas of a stone which have been cut, polished and positioned at different angles which allow light to enter and reflect back from the diamond. The depth and width and the uniformity of the facets control the brilliance and the durability of diamonds. The quality of the facets are the major determining factor in enhancing the diamond's ability to sparkle or reflect light and play a large part in the resulting brilliance of the stone.
Diamond Facets
Good Diamond Cut
What constitutes good diamond Cut? Good cuts are effected by several different factors:
Proportion affects the cut - The diamond's width and depth have a large impact on the brilliance of the stone. Cuts which are too shallow appear lifeless as the light traveling through the stone is lost out of the bottom of the diamond .Cuts which are too deep will appear lifeless as the light traveling through the stone is lost out of the sides of the stone.
Diamond Symmetry affects the cut and refers to the alignment of the facets of a diamond (Diamond symmetry) should be cut to achieve the best play of light.
Diamond Polish affects the cut - the surface of the facets should be smoothly polished to enable light to pass through them
A misaligned, broken, chipped or missing culet is a common problem. Misaligned or extra facets are also a common problem
Fancy Diamond Cuts
Fancy cut diamonds include the Emerald, Marquise, Heart, Oval, Pear and Princess cuts and shapes. A Fancy Cut is a way of cutting a diamond to maximize the carat weight. A rough diamond which might only yield a half carat in a Brilliant Cut might yield another 50% if cut into one of the above shapes. A Fancy Cut diamond allows the cutter to use the best attributes of a rough diamond whilst eliminate inclusions and blemishes.
As a quick overview CUT is one of the most important of the four C's. What this means to you is SPARKLE! If a diamond is not cut well it just won't sparkle. This is because the proportions of a diamond are scientifically designed to achieve maximum brilliance. You need to pay close attention to the measurements of a diamond and the percentages. For example if a diamond weight is 1.00 carat is should measure 6.5mm in diameter. (I have seen many people get ripped of by buying a diamond by weight and not paying any attention to proportions.) If that 1.00 Carat only has a 5.8mm diameter it measures the same as a .75 carat. This can occur when a diamond is cut deep so the weight of the diamond is in the bottom (pavilion). So you have just paid for a 1 ct diamond that looks like a 3/4 ct...not good. They can also be cut shallow. this does make them look a bit larger than what they weigh but the down side to both, deep and shallow, is that they will not have the same fire and brilliance of a well proportioned diamond. We all know that women LOVE the SPARKLE!!!
2-CARAT
Carat of Karat? This confuses many people but the correct word is carat! It is sometimes incorrectly spelled as “karat” which refers to the fineness of pure gold and gold alloys. What about the history and origins of the word 'carat'? Where does the term 'carat' originate? The word carat derives from the Greek word 'keration' meaning fruit of the carob. The Carob tree (Ceratonia siliqua) is an evergreen tree, with an edible pod containing seeds, which is native to the Mediterranean region. The seeds of the Carob were used on precision scales as units of weight for small quantities of precious gemstones because of their uniform size. The weight of an average carob seed is 200 milligrams. The weight of one carat is precisely 200 milligrams, or 0.2 grams.
Carat Weight defines the weight, not the size, of a Diamond The term 'carat' is often misunderstood to mean the size of a diamond. The size of a diamond relate to the dimensions or measurement in terms of length, width and height. The carat weight is the standard unit of measure that defines the weight of a diamond.
Information and Definition
The following definition can be used to clarify Carat Weight: <<<<<<<
A carat is abbreviated as "ct."
1 ct. = 0.2 grams and 100 points = 1 carat
1 ct. = 100 points
3-CLARITY
What is the meaning of Diamond Clarity? Definition: The clarity of a diamond relates to exactly how clear a diamond is. The clarity of a diamond describes the presence, or absence, of Inclusions (flaws) within the diamond and any blemishes on its surface. Inclusions disrupt the flow of light in the diamond so that some of light reflected will be lost. The numbers, sizes, colors, locations and visibility of any inclusions and / or blemishes can effect the relative clarity of a diamond and its quality. The majority of Diamond Inclusions cannot be seen by the human eye so systems have been developed to grade diamond clarity.
Diamond Clarity Ratings
Any internal inclusions or external blemishes interfere with light passing through the diamond and its ability to scatter and transmit light. As the majority of inclusions cannot be seen by the human eye they are located by a jeweler under a 10 power magnification and then graded according to their clarity. Diamonds are rated and graded for clarity on a scale ranging from high quality and expensive flawless to imperfect.
Diamond Clarity Scale / Rating and Grading Reports
Many grading / rating reports confirm whether or not a diamond has inclusions or blemishes, and if it does, the level of the effect - Flawless, Internally Flawless, Very, Very Small Inclusions, Very Small Inclusions, Small Inclusions and Large Inclusions. The different grades and levels of Diamond Clarity are described in the following Diamond Clarity Scale by specific abbreviations:
Internally Flawless- IF
Free from internal blemishes visible under 10x magnification
Very Very Slightly included- VVS1, VVS2
Inclusions and/or external blemishes very difficult to locate under 10x magnification
Very Slightly included- VS1, VS2
Inclusions and external blemishes difficult to locate under 10x magnification
Slightly included -SI1, SI2
Inclusions and external blemishes easy to locate under 10x magnification
Included- I1, I2, I3
Medium or large inclusions and/or external blemishes which are usually visible with the naked eye under favorable lighting conditions.
4-COLOR
Diamond Color is an important category in the 4C's. Diamonds are found in nature in a variety of hues. The colorless or white diamond color are the most common, whilst some tinted stones, colored diamonds, are extremely rare and valuable. The shades of Diamond Color include yellow, blue, black, pink, red, orange, green and brown. Diamond Color is determined by the impurities or structural defects that cause the coloration. Pure or nearly pure diamonds are transparent and colorless - referred to as a white diamond color.
Color Grading Scale
D-E-F, Colorless
G-H-I-J, Near colorless, Usually don't go below this unless you want visible color.
K-L-M, Faint tint
N-O-P-Q-R, Light tint,
S-T-U-V-W-X-Y-Z, Usually dark yellow to a light shade of brown, shade clearly visible to the naked eye.
These are the 4 C’s Of Diamonds. The Ring quality is also something that you need to look at. One of the best ways to tell quality is by turning the ring upside-down and looking at the inside. If the inside of the ring is carved out and hollow it has been lighted up to cut cost. This can create a few different problems down the road. First the ring structure will be much weaker than a solid ring and second the hollowed out ring will not be comfortable to wear. A solid ring that has only small holes for cleaning purposes will outlast a hollow ring three times as long. You can also use a Jewelers loop (magnifying glass) to look at the ring closer to look for pits in the gold, even set diamonds, and smooth/clean craftsmanship.
